Sidemount Scuba Diving Evolves Away from the BCD Jacket Harness
Proper gear for a Safe Cayman Island Dive
Before you start your Cayman Island scuba diving adventure it is important to ensure you not only have all of the gear you will need, but that it is also in good condition. Making sure you have the right scuba equipment will determine the safety and success of your Cayman Island diving experience. Your equipment checklist should include a wetsuit, fins, buoyancy compensator device (BCD), scuba tank, regulator, mask and snorkel, and other tools such as a knife.
- Wetsuit: Depending on the temperature of the water will determine the thickness of your wetsuit you will need for your dive. Wetsuits not only provide protection against cold temperatures, but also protect against stings, cut, and abrasions. Your suit should fit you well and provide you with flexibility to move freely in the water. When on your Cayman Island dive you may be required to wear a wetsuit because of its warm climate. However, if diving deep it should always be a precaution.
- Fins: To be able to move easier in the water you want to purchase swim fins that are wide and will help fight water resistance. Your fins should fit tightly and may be secured by a handle or shoe like enclosure.
- BCD: This equipment aids divers in ascending and descending into the ocean. This is an important piece of safety equipment for divers and should be checked before very dive to ensure it is working properly.
- Scuba tanks: When selecting a tank you should consider your dive plan. The type of tank you use for your Cayman Island diving trip will be based on the length of your dive. In tropical areas like the Cayman's that has great visibility and warm water diver will only need one aluminum tank, usually about 80 cubic feet of air. This is another type of equipment that must always be checked before the dive to ensure it will not malfunction. This goes for your regulator as well.
- Other tools: You want to make sure your mask has a nose enclosure, fits securely, and is water tight. Although it is not a necessity, carrying a knife may come in handy in case you get snagged on fishing nets, or need to pry rocks away.

Back inflation BCD or Jacket style??
What's the difference? And why? I used to dive and now getting back into it.. I want to buy better equipment so I don't feel so claustraphobic. Which style BCD is least constricting?
The backplate will probably feel a bit less constricting but you have to have a healthy back as there is a tendancy for divers to arch their backs using backplate/wing systems. If you ever intend to expand into using independent twins or more technical diving, go for a bp/w that can expand to those capabilities. However, there are other advantages to the jacket style. Buoyancy is easier to control, I think, and organization of accessories (snorkel, slates, etc.) is easy with pockets and many new jacket designs are less bulky than others, especially the travel bcd's. Your best bet is to go to a well-stocked shop, actually go to a few and see if you can rent different styles to try them out. Never buy a bcd without testing it for fit and ergonomics. No one bcd will make everyone happy.
Good luck!
