Choosing An Underwater Camera

If you enjoy underwater sports such as snorkeling or scuba diving, you're going to want to have an underwater camera so that you can take pictures. Fortunately, underwater cameras are becoming more affordable, with many types and models from which to choose. So, you should be able to find a camera which will not only suit your photography needs, but also your budget.

If you are just starting out, and haven't given too much thought yet as to what type of underwater camera you might ultimately decide to choose, a disposable underwater camera can often be a good first choice. Of course, the quality of the photos that you take with a disposable camera is not going to be as good as you would get with a higher quality camera, but it can give you an idea of the types of photos that you want to take, before you invest in a better camera. They can vary in price, but the average is around $11 for a camera with 25 exposures.

If you are already experienced in photography, you might want to skip the disposable camera and buy a good Waterproof Camera instead. These cameras were designed specifically for underwater use, with rubber gaskets to keep everything waterproof. They are also easy to hold onto underwater, and usually range in price from around $200, up to over $1,000 for a very high-end sophisticated model with many features. There are also some newer models of digital cameras that, while they look like a normal camera, are great to use as an underwater camera. These are generally affordable in price, averaging around $300 for a camera with an adequate number of features for underwater use.

If you already have a camera that you are comfortable using, you might prefer to just purchase a plastic waterproof casing for it that will make your existing camera waterproof. Unfortunately, these plastic waterproof housings are often quite expensive, and need to be purchased for a specific model of camera, which means you can't use the same housing for a different camera, if you change models. For the price, many people feel that underwater cameras are a better buy than a plastic casing for an existing camera.

When shopping for underwater cameras, you will need to decide whether you want a film camera or a digital camera. Digital cameras are becoming much more popular as an underwater camera, just as they are for other types of uses. You will also want to pay close attention to the features the camera has in regards to exposure. Some less expensive cameras only offer automatic exposure, but you might prefer to be able to manually control the exposure. You'll want to choose an underwater camera with a good viewfinder or large LCD screen. Remember, things often move fast underwater, and you're going to be wearing equipment that restricts your vision. You'll also want to make sure that the camera will operate at the depth that you normally dive. Finally, because of the fact that underwater cameras often take a lot of abuse, make sure you purchase one that has a good warranty.

What underwater digital camera should I buy?

I am looking for an underwater digital camera for my vacation. I dont know which company makes good underwater digital camera and I was hoping that somebody in here could help me out finding an underwater digital camera.

Definately go for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2. This underwater digital camera is nothing less than fantastic. It takes awesome picture quality, very easy to use and understand and very travel friendly.

And of course it is as waterproof as it gets. You wont go wrong with it.
