Best Canon camera for diving?
The camera even has an underwater auto mode incorporated. that you can fine tune settings like white balance on the fly and a multitude of user defined programmable functions besides the usual "auto" modes. Dirt simple to learn to use. I chose the IkeLite housing over Canon's own proprietary housing because of both the depth rating ( IkeLite is good to 200 feet) and the fact that the only control you can't access while the camera is in the housing is the print feature (something you wouldn't use on a dive anyway). The Canon housing didn't allow access to some of the controls and was only rated to 130. I often tech dive so that didn't suit me.
I'm happy with this rig. The video and stills quality is excellent on the surface as well as on a dive. I'm using a 4 gig HCDC in it, which gives me an entire dive on video at high res with room for any stills taken on highest res too. I've never run out of space. These cameras are also pretty reasonably priced. I bought another one shortly after my gear bag incident just in case I pulled another idiot stunt like that again so that I would have a back up should I ever require it. The IkeLite housing I bought only fits that model Canon. There's one brand new in a box if it's ever required. I believe I paid $250 for the first one and $170 for the second one a year later. They ought to have come down a bit more by now. The one thing I would recommend is using the NiMH rechargeable AA's with it. Don't use anything else. The cold will smoke normal rechargeables fairly quickly. I found I was getting one dive on video and then changing batteries during the surface interval. Using the NiMH batteries and they'll do two dives on vid easily.
One thing that I found handy with this camera was the TV video cable they supply you with. When your day on the boat is done, you can hook the camera up to a TV set and do a slide show of your days dives with no other equipment required.

I'm sure they have updated the camera by now but one similar or a later version of the same model will still do the trick admirably and using this combination let's you go with strobes or video light for the housing that are slaved to the camera's flash via a diffuser that's supplied with the housing or you can use the translucent diffuser (also supplied) to use the camera's flash alone to eliminate backscatter.
