What affordable snorkel gear is worth my money?
I'm going to Mexico for my honeymoon, and want to bring my own snorkel gear instead of renting it. It's not like I travel to snorkel several times a year, so I don't need anything top of the line. But, I'm not an amateur either...so I don't want some cheap $15 set. I would like to know specifically what brands and their models that I should consider. Around $50 is my limit....mask, fins, and snorkel. Thanks!
I just snorkel. I've looked online a bit for some gear sets...seen some that are REALLY cheap, some that are under $100 and then ones that are several hundred dollars. I just don't live near a beach, so it's not like I'll get to use it all the time. So, I don't feel the need to get the high end gear. BUT, I do want decent fins, a mask that won't leak, and a snorkel that won't fill up with water! Thanks:)
Not all snorkeling gear is the same. If you are looking for a mask make sure that it is a silicone skirt with tempered glass lenses.
Avoid masks with skirting made of rubber, PVC and silflex.
Rubber will dry out and start cracking, PVC is stiff and uncomfortable,
Silflex is less stiff but requires a perfect fit.
Silicone is flexible, durable and above all else comfortable.
Having tempered glass lenses in the mask will allow you the opportunity to use it for scuba diving should you decide to get into that sport. The first link below will give you pointers on proper mask, fin and snorkel selection.

The best snorkel that I have found so far is by Oceanic. It is called the ultra dry. It actually shuts off if it goes below the surface of the water. The third link goes to that item if you wanted to know more about it
