The Basics of Fly Fishing
Fly Fishing, as the name suggests, is obviously different from the traditional fishing experiences. Before you explore fly fishing, it is very important to know what it means and how it is done. For all the novices who want to learn about fly fishing, you will find some basic ideas about this beloved hobby in here.
What is Fly Fishing?
The very first step to fly fishing is to understand what this sport is all about. As stated before, it is different from conventional fishing because it involves the use of an artificial fly. The method of fishing is quite unconventional; it uses fly anglers to cast the hook, having bits of feather, foam, fur, yarn or other such material attached to it using thread to create the 'fly'. This feature is different from the regular worms or baits used for fishing.
There are two basic types of fly fishing - dry fly fishing and nymph fishing. On case of dry fly fishing, the fishermen use an artificial fly that is casted and made to float on water. The fly is meant for passing over the fish which will certainly rise up to bite it and the fishermen will have control over the fish. This is the most preferred fly fishing technique because it is visible to the eye. However, there is one disadvantage of this method- you cannot catch hold of the fish that feed underwater.
Nymph fly fishing, on the other hand, is a totally different method from dry fly fishing. In this case when flies lay their eggs in the lake or river, the eggs hatch to form nymphs, which then make their way to reach the surface where they would hatch to become a fly. Hence, nymph fly fishing actually use imitations of various nymphs that usually stay below the water surface. This type of fly fishing is channeling, because all the actions actually take place underwater. However, it is the best way of catching fish like salmon, trout, chars and other such game fish.
Equipment Used
Fly fishing requires different equipments from that of regular fishing. It requires rods, lines and reels, leaders and flies and many such types of equipment that have been designed only for fly fishing.
The rods used for fly fishing are long and lightweight. The line, however, is heavy, but its density can vary depending on the method you would use to fly, such as float or sink. The line needs to be matched to the rod by using weight. A beginner should use rods that are moderately priced. However, once you become an expert, you can try the graphite rods for best effect.
Flies are lightweight fly fishing equipment. It is generally attached to the line using a leader. A leader is usually 2 to 3 meters in length, which might taper to a fine end. This is known as tippet. Tippets are also available in different sizes, and the best can be chosen according to the need.
Fly fishing is considered to be a relaxing and thrilling experience for people who love this form. You can find good fishing books to learn the tricks and ideas about this fishing type.
